The agency was founded in August of 1990 as the M. A. Rodriguez Agency. The name of the agency was changed to M.A.R. Financial Group in May of 1991.
M.A.R. is owned and managed by Jerry F. Mathis CLU, ChFC, and his spouse, Mary A. Rodriguez LUTCF, RHU. Mathis and Rodriguez share the management of the agency and divide the responsibilities of market research and product review along the lines of their individual expertise. Both Mathis and Rodriguez are active members of several professional insurance and financial services associations, and are frequent speakers on the subject of insurance and financial matters to consumer groups.
M.A.R. represents employers and associations as an agent and benefits broker, helping to select and manage group policies for medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and supplementary insurance products. M.A.R. markets fully insured plans from all major carriers and self-insured plans through a number of licensed TPAs and re-insurers. M.A.R. also provides comprehensive full service insurance and risk management services to Texas individuals and families.
Additionally, since both Mathis and Rodriguez are licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance as Life and Health Insurance Counselors, M.A.R. Financial is one of the few Texas agencies legally empowered to provide fee-based insurance consulting services to its clients.
M.A.R. is committed to provide leading edge support, as demonstrated by the recent addition of a property and casualty division which rounds out the insurance services available to its clients. M A R was an early adopter of imaging and database technologies that improve service efficiency and increase client satisfaction.
Hi-tech is important in our rapidly changing business environment, but Mathis and Rodriguez remain focused on providing the kind of high-touch service that is becoming all too rare in today’s e-commerce, digitized world.
Jesse joined the agency in 2003 as an administrative assistant. He currently serves M A R as IT/IS Specialist, managing the company's intranet, database, and network. He has developed several proprietary programs to manage client data and streamline the agency's enrollment and service processes. Additionally, Jesse assists with employee enrollments in the employer's workplace.
Roxanna came to M A R in 2006 and in 2010 was appointed to the position of Agency Administrator. Roxanna manages the entire back-end of the agency. She also mamages customer service, answering questions about coverage and enrollment issues for the clients of the agency.
Gracie has been employed by M A R since 2009 and currently manages the data entry functions and assists with customer service.
Glen joined the agency in 2010 after a six year enlistment in the Air Force as an air traffic controller. He brings a dedication to serve along with an attention to detail to his position as Account Executive. Glen's primary job is new business development, but he also assists with client service and enrollments.
Sue is the General Manager and Chief Operating Officer for the agency's property and casualty insurance division, A.R.M. Insurance Agency. She joined the agency in 2007 after a successful carreer as a consultant to local Housing Authorities. Sue brings many years of business experience as well as a very detailed and technical mind to the P&C operations of the agency.
MARY A. RODRIGUEZ, LUTCF, RHU
Mary A. Rodriguez is a native of San Antonio and a 1973 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. She earned her Baccalaureate degree in Music Education from St. Mary’s University in 1976. From 1977 until 1985, Mary taught music in San Antonio area parochial schools.
Mary began her career in the financial services industry in1985 when she joined the San Antonio agency of Principal Mutual Life, In 1990, after five years as a career agent with Principal, Mary joined with her husband, Jerry Mathis, to open an independent insurance agency, M.A.R. Financial Group.
Mary was installed as a Fellow of the Life Underwriters Training Council in 1990, and she has been a frequent moderator for the LUTC education program, teaching the disability income and business insurance courses. She earned the Registered Health Underwriter’s designation in 1995. She is currently involved in studies leading to the designation of Registered Employee Benefit Consultant.
Mary is an active member of the National, Texas, and San Antonio Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. In 1999 she was elected to a two-year term as Director for the Association for Health Insurance Advisors, a focus group of NAIFA. In 2006 she was elected President of NAIFA-San Antonio. She is also an active member of the National, Texas, and San Antonio Association of Health Underwriters.
Mary is a frequent public speaker before civic groups on the topic of insurance and risk management, and she has lectured on business insurance concerns for SCORE.
Mary has authored articles on Disability Insurance and Medical Insurance which have been printed in the San Antonio Business Journal, as well as several national publications. She has been frequently quoted as an expert on Health and Disability insurance in the San Antonio Express News and other periodicals.
JERRY F MATHIS CLU, ChFC, LUTCF
Jerry Mathis has been a resident of San Antonio since 1978. He entered the financial services industry in 1983 after a successful career in the automotive aftermarket. During his first two years in the insurance business, Jerry qualified for many industry and company awards for sales proficiency and conduct.
Jerry earned the Chartered Life Underwriter designation from the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 1986 and the Chartered Financial Consultant designation from the same institution in 1988.
In 1991 he earned the LUTCF designation from the Life Underwriters Training Council in Bethesda, Maryland, and for three years served on the national committee to author textbooks for LUTC’s Advanced Sales Training Program.
From 1997 through 2003, Jerry served the San Antonio chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors as a Director, Officer, President, and as Immediate Past President for the year 2003-2004. In January, 2006, Jerry was inducted into the NAIFA-San Antonio “Hall of Fame” an honor bestowed on only 17 other individuals in the 76 year history of the organization. He also is an active member of the San Antonio Chapter of Financial Services Professionals, the Financial Planning Association, and many other professional associations.
Jerry speaks regularly to industry groups on the topic of changing trends in insurance marketing. He has authored numerous articles for the trade press and general interest publications. In addition, Jerry has registered M.A.R. Financial Group as an authorized provider of continuing education courses to insurance agents throughout Texas.
